Horror Manga: Pet Shop of Horrors

"True destiny cannot be changed. The reason is actually quite simple, true destiny isn’t granted. It is earned."-Count D,Pet Shop of Horrors

Hello guys, today I would like to recommend some manga of the horror genre and my pick is Pet Shop of Horror. Am going to give you guys some overview what this manga is about and why I love it so much. (I seldom like manga, but when I do, its GOOOOOOD) TRUST ME ON THIS, THIS MANGA ROCKS.

Pet Shop of Horrors is a Japanese manga belong to the HORROR genre created by Matsuri Akino. The stories tells about a mysterious Chinese man by the name of Count D who is the owner of a peculiar petshop located in the heart of Chinatown, Los Angeles and the various patrons that visit his shop. It has 10 volumes and 41 chapters in total.

Count D

Count D is an interesting young man who has the appearance of a beautiful young lady and was often mistaken to be a woman. He likes to wear ancient chinese long dress and kimono and has a strong cravings for sweet desserts (often toothaches as well). He seems to be a well-versed man who knows the force of nature and animals more than anyone in the manga. He can speak to animals too and is always on a contant hunt to collect the rarest animals, eg Totetsu, Dragon, Mermaid, Medusa, Kirin etc

What makes this manga so interesting are Count D's rare pets, which all are potrayed as humanoid forms, and to purchase them, comes with a contract of 3 rules. Under any circumstances one of the rule is broken, it will result in terrible consequences for the buyer, for which the pet shop claims no liability. You probably didn't understand what I mean by humanoid appearances, but imagine there was a cat in front of you. Some people may perceive it as a cat, some may perceive them as human (without knowing that is really a cat).

The ability to see humanoid appearance differ from person to person, some part of the manga suggest it may be linked to the incense Count D was burning to create hallucination, others suggest one can perceive humanoid appearance of those we held dearly to (your deceased lover, your deceased daughter so on...) and also those of our strongest wish (what you want and what you need).

It was proposed that Count D originated from ancient China which at that time, there was a group of priest and priestess who can communicate with animals and are deemed special. The king that time ask for a priestess' hand in marriage but was denied of love. Out of rage, the king ordered the assassination of all that are special. Count D's grandfather manage to escape but can only reproduce (and continue on his type) by means of cloning, which explained why the grandfather, father and son looks identical. It was also said that due to this incident, Count D family swear to teach humans the lesson they deserve by means of selling them rare animals. Because when the buyer breaks the rules, all hell break loose, linking to mysterious homicide involving animals claws or bites but no clues was ever found.

The main character are Count D and detective Leon Orcot, who constantly believe Count D is related to malicious criminal activity and the pet shop is merely a cover-up for drug and human trafficking. As the series progress, he learns more about the pet shop and Count D, entering a somewhat odd friendship with Count D while working his way to uncover the truth.
Overall, I highly recommend this Manga and I hope you will like it as much as I do.
There are also a 4-episodes anime made based on some of the stories from the manga. Be sure to check them out.
Signing off with love <3
