Bookworm: Books You Might Need For Your Dental First Year

"The more that you read,
the more things you will know.
The more that you learn,
the more places you will go."
-Dr Seuss

"Freshmen are FRIENDS, not FOOD!"

Greetings Juniors, especially those from University Sains Malaysia (Scientific University of Malaysia). Every year, freshmen from my dental school will always ask senior about the same old questions. WHAT BOOKS SHOULD I STUDY FOR MY FIRST YEAR? Well, no worries, my dear USM juniors, here is a list of what I used to study when I was a freshman. Do take note that what I recommend here is what I had studied and it might differ from person to person or due to the slight change in syallabus. But still, feel free to have a look. For dental students that hail from other dental school such as UKM, UM, Aimst, PIDC and so on, our dental syallabus might not be completely the same but still you can always use this as a reference. Let's get started.

#1. Berkovitz, Oral Anatomy, Histology and Embryology. Price around RM130

While berkovitz is sorta complicated for beginners, it can be a foundation in your early dental years.
#2. Mary Bath-Balagh, IIlustrated Dental Embryology, Histology and Anatomy, RM 130

This is a good beginner book and also an alternative to Berkovits. I used this book often. Its easier to understand and more concise, but for exam-wise, Berkovits is still preferred in USM.

#3. Woelfel's Dental Anatomy, Ebook Available, Price Unsure.

This is an important book because it showcase the tooth anatomy, a thing which all dental students HAVE to know.
#4. Wheeler's Dental Anatomy, Physiology, and Occlusion. Price Unknown

Some of my friends are using this instead of Woelfel, so it might work out for you too.
#5. Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy For Dentistry. Price around RM130

This is a must have book that will last you throughout your dental career. In fact, many seniors think this is the best reference book for the head and neck structure.
#6. Chaurasia's Human Anatomy. Price RM100

Most of you probably have never seen this book, even the seniors, but I do seen some peers using this. Thou it might not be as beautiful as those in Netter, it does help in understanding the complicated structures. While I still recommend Netter over this book, you can always borrow it free from the library.

#1. PHYSIOLOGY: Sherwood: Introduction to Human Physiology. Price around RM80-RM100

This is my holy grail to physiology back then. I wouldnt recommend it for medical students thou because its a more simple, concise but so easy to understand. I personally love this book but that is just my preference.
#2. PHYSIOLOGY: Guyton and Halls Textbook of Medical Physiology and Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology. Price unsure.

Some of my medical friends are using these two books because they are more complete.

#3: BIOCHEMICAL: Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Biochemistry RM70-90

A good basic to your biochemistry incase you need to study some.

#4. ANATOMY: Netter Altas of Human Anatomy RM70-100

This book is the basics for medical students, but unless your dental school is conjoin with medical syallabus, only the head and neck part is useful for dental students.

#5. ANATOMY: Gray's Anatomy for Students. Price about RM130.
Dental students may use this as a reference, but its not a staple. Its better than Netter atlas because of the explanation but netter have better graphics. I would recommend getting this from the library instead of buying it if you are a dental student.

That's all from me, signing off with love.
Hope this post comes helpful and do enjoy your dental first year to the MAX!!!
